Heat Wave Health Effects: Protect Yourself From Extreme Heat

A heat wave is a condition of scorching hot weather. The Human body can regulate temperature to adjust to climatic conditions. The temperature extremes affect the body temperature regulation mechanism. If you have respiratory problems, this weather phenomenon can make them worse.

Symptoms of heat-related illness

A heatwave can cause heat-related illnesses like heat stroke, heat exhaustion, and heat cramps. Heat stroke is a medical emergency condition. Below are some of the common symptoms mentioned 

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Fever
  • Dehydration
  • Muscle cramps
  • Vomiting
  • weakness

Who is at risk? 

Most of the population is susceptible to heat waves. Some people are at greater risk than others. 

  • Infants and children
  • People aged 65 years
  • Overweight people

What to do during a heatwave 

  • Educate yourself: Stay updated about the heat waves in your area. Stay indoors during the noon time. 
  • Hydrate well: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated. You can include ORS solution, buttermilk, coconut water, lemon water, etc. 
  • Clothing: Choose lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. You should wear sunglasses and light clothing if you are going outside. Cover your head and use sunscreen. 
  • Physical activity: Heat causes more exertion, so exercise in a cool area, or at least in the shade. Take cool showers after exercise. 
  • Ventilation:  Open doors and windows to ventilate the cooking area adequately.

What to avoid during a heatwave

  • Avoid liquids that contain alcohol, caffeine, or large amounts of sugar.
  • Limit or avoid outdoor activity during the peak of the heatwave. 
  • Never leave children or pets in a parked car.
  • Avoid dark, heavy, and tight clothes.
  • Vigorous exercise could be limited or avoided during hot peak hours.
