Kidney stones are also called nephrolithiasis or urolithiasis. The kidney removes waste materials from the body through urine. Excess mineral deposits lead to forming of a kidney stone in the urinary tract. It can be different types and in a location inside the urinary tract causing symptoms. The renal stone varies in the shapes and sizes of crystal present in the urinary tract. 

What are the causes of kidney stones?

  • Family history of kidney stone 
  • Dehydration
  • Underlying medical condition: Urinary tract infection, hyperparathyroidism
  • Continuous exposure to a hot climate 
  • High blood pressure 
  • High levels of salt intake
  • Abnormal urinary tract anatomy

What are the Symptoms of Kidney stones?

  • Fever with chills
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting 
  • Severe pain on either side of your lower back(Flank Pain)
  • Difficulty urinating
  • Blood in the urine(Hematuria)
  • Pain when urinating
  • Frequent urge to urinate 
  • Bad smell urine 

Diagnosis and Treatment of Kidney stone 

Your doctor may perform a certain test Like ultrasound, ct scan, blood test, urine test and do a physical evaluation to diagnose kidney stones. 

Treatment may include medicine and surgical procedure to remove the renal stone. Medication such as alpha blocker, oral alkalinization, 

How to prevent kidney stones?

  • Increase your  water intake 
  • Includes fruits and vegetables in your meal
  • Limit your animal protein ( 1 serving/ day) 
  • Follow a low-sodium diet
